Switzerland and England meet in the 3rd place play-off in the UEFA Nations League, kicking off at 2:00pm local time in Guimares, Portugal.

Switzerland

Switzerland were the big underdogs going into the tournament, and despite them being knocked out in the semi-final stage, they had impressed the onlookers on Wednesday night. In particular, was Liverpool player Xherdan Shaqiri who was a constant nuisance to Portugal’s backline all game. He delivered many dangerous crosses, and create many openings for the Swiss. Unfortunately for them, despite having more possession, and creating more chances, their only goal was a dubious penalty. At the other end of the pitch, they managed to catch Ronaldo on a bad day, as he scored three fantastic goals against them. Switzerland have missed out on winning their first ever major title, but will want to use the stage set on Sunday to give another fantastic display.

England

England were joint favourites along with Portugal to win the tournament, but their semi-final with Netherlands finished in absolutely shocking fashion. Winning at half time, England were on course for their first competitive final since 1966, but were pegged back in the 2nd half before going into extra time. Huge mistakes from Ross Barkley and John Stones gifted Netherlands two goals as England saw themselves relinquish a 2nd semi-final lead in consecutive years. They will feel hard done by that Jesse Lingard’s goal was ruled out as he was marginally offside, as VAR intervened. England now how to regroup and play for pride in this upcoming match against Switzerland. Coming last in the tournament they had high hopes of winning would set back their progress in recent years. It’s likely Gareth Southgate will chop and change his squad around.

Head to Head

England have a surprisingly dominant record against Switzerland, with 17 wins in this fixture, compared to 3 successes of the Swiss. What makes it more alarming for Switzerland is that two of those wins were friendlies before the 1950’s, and their only other one was in the World Cup qualifiers in 1981. The sides have met seven times since the turn of the millennium, with England winning six out of seven. Switzerland did manage a 2-2 draw in England when qualifying for the European Championships in 2012 but that’s their only bit of joy. England and Switzerland did meet in Euro 2004, also held in Portugal, with England coming out on top in a 3-0 win. Back then, it was a young Wayne Rooney that was starting to steal the headlines in an England shirt. The two sides also met in a friendly last year following the World Cup, with England winning 1-0 – Marcus Rashford with the goal.

Predictions and Betting Tips

Switzerland are at 12/5 to win with England at 21/20. For the sides to draw, that is priced at 13/5. If you prefer on betting on the outright winner, Switzerland are at 11/8, with England priced at 8/15. A day rest, and 30 minutes less playing time may help the Swiss here, and looking at their history against England, they are due a win here. I will back Switzerland to win 2-0, at a valuable 18/1. Yes, that might surprise you, but you have to trust your hunches, and I’d back Haris Seferovic to get the first goal at 6/1. I believe it will be an open game, so I am open to betting on there to be plenty of goals – over 4.5 goals at 4/1 looks tasty. If you want to back the three lions, then Harry Kane is overdue a goal, and he is at 23/20 to score at any time, or 11/2 to score a brace. Finally, for the tipsters, you’d get good money on Switzerland to win from behind, just as the Dutch did on Thursday, at 16/1.
