The Copa America 2019 kicks off in Brazil on Friday night, as the hosts welcome Bolivia. The tournament will span over three weeks as the final will take place on July 7th, so this will keep us football mad fans occupied for some time throughout this summer. Prior to the tournament starting, you can bet on Copa America specials such as winners of each individual group, and the tournament top goal scorer. Following on from my predictions for the outright winner, let’s continue with more betting specials, with my expert tips and guidance to help me along the way.

Group A Winner

Group A Teams: Brazil, Bolivia, Venezuela, Peru

Odds to win group;
Brazil – 1/7
Peru – 7/1
Venezuela – 16/1
Bolivia 28/1

As hosts, you’d expect Brazil to comfortably get 9 points from 9 and win the group comfortably. At 1/7, it’s almost a dead cert, but here are some thoughts that may sway your decision elsewhere. Brazil have only won their group twice out of the last five tournaments, not including the last Copa America where they surprisingly lost to Peru in the group stage which equated to them being relegated. Peru instead won that group, and they are at 7/1 to repeat that success again. I cannot see Venezuela and Bolivia causing many problems here, and believe their odds don’t offer enough value for what would be a huge shock. My prediction is that Brazil will win the group, but I wouldn’t bet your house on it. Also, if you want a high reward/high risk, then don’t be shy in backing a Peru to surprise again.

Group B Winner

Group B Teams: Argentina, Colombia, Paraguay, Qatar

Odds to win group;
Argentina – 8/13
Colombia – 15/8
Paraguay – 14/1
Qatar – 20/1

Argentina are understandably favourites given the talent of their squad, that is always headlined by a certain Lionel Messi. Not only that, but they often finish top of their Copa America groups, including the last two versions, in 2015 and 2016 where they eventually reached the final – but lost on both occasions. Aside from Argentina, who are at decent value at 8/13, the only other threat would be Colombia who topped a group containing Argentina in it back in the 2011 Copa America. Colombia have excellent players in their squad including the emerging striker Duvan Zapata, and star man James Rodriguez. At 15/8, they’ll feel more than capable of topping the group, and it may certainly depend on who gets the right result on match day one, as Argentina and Colombia meet. Elsewhere, Paraguay haven’t topped a group since 2004, and have failed to qualify for the last two World Cups. Their golden era of the last two decades looks to be a thing of the past, but they still recall veteran striker Oscar Cardozo instead of instilling new blood into the team. As for Qatar, they have next to no chance considering that teams invited to Copa America never fare too well, and they haven’t played in a major tournament outside of Asia. 20/1 for them to win, but realistically should be about 100/1.

Group C Winner

Group C Teams: Uruguay, Ecuador, Japan, Chile

Odds to win group;
Uruguay – 10/11
Chile – 13/8
Ecuador – 6/1
Japan – 18/1

Uruguay are favourites as they certainly boast the strongest squad in the group, with Atletico Madrid duo Jose Gimenez and Diego Godin providing a solid foundation, for a pivotal attack including Luis Suarez and Edison Cavani. However, since winning the tournament in 2011, Uruguay have only managed to finish 3rd in their last two tournament groups, when their current squad was a few years younger, and actually in better form. Chile are at 13/8 despite being the current two-time champions, winning both the 2015 and 2016 championships. However, there is more pessimism around their team at this moment, because they are still heavily reliant on star players who are now 3 years older than their previous success, and are not the same players they once were – Alexis Sanchez in particular. Ecuador at 6/1 and Japan at 18/1 are both outsider odds, but should be greater. Japan are an invited team that will be fielding a young inexperienced team, so at 18/1, you have medium reward with a high risk. As for Ecuador, they haven’t won a competitive fixture for over two years, and come into this tournament as the worst team in form. I’d have to back Uruguay here.

Top Goal Scorer

Odds to be Top Goal scorer;

Lionel Messi (Argentina) – 3/1
Gabriel Jesus (Brazil) – 6/1
Luis Suarez (Uruguay) – 15/2
Edison Cavani (Uruguay) – 8/1
Roberto Firmino (Brazil) – 9/1
Lautaro Martinez (Argentina) – 10/1
Sergio Aguero (Argentina) – 10/1
Duvan Zapata (Colombia) – 14/1
Richarlison (Brazil) – 14/1
Coutinho (Brazil) – 16/1

When looking to bet on the top scorer of the tournament, we don’t necessarily have to think about the quality of the player, but instead whether they will play enough games and if they will go far in the tournament. For example, Sergio Aguero is a serial goal scorer for Manchester City, but is not always a guaranteed starter for Argentina. Additionally, Duvan Zapata is a hot prospect at this tournament after an excellent season with Atalanta, but Colombia are not tipped to reach too far in the tournament, so this will hold he back. Lionel Messi hasn’t been a top goal scorer at this tournament before, despite being close in 2015, but as always he is the favourite at 3/1, and that doesn’t offer enough value to me.

You can bet on him to be the top goal scorer as well as Argentina winning it in a double, priced at 18/1. Personally though, my gut intuition is telling me that Brazil will be the team to beat, and have been gifted a relatively easy group with Peru, Venezuela and Bolivia. I can see them scoring plenty of goals in those three matches, so it’s likely that Gabriel Jesus will have a big part to play, being the main forward. I think the top goal scorer will come from Brazil, as it did in 2007, when they last won the championships.

Thank you for reading my predictions and tips for the group winners and scorers. Now, once the bets have been placed, all we have to do is wait for the tournament to kick off, this upcoming Friday!
