Roma host Juventus in Serie A on Sunday evening, kicking off at 8:30pm local time in the Italian capital. It’s always one of the biggest fixtures in the calendar year in Italy, as the hosts are in desperate need of points.
Home Team: Roma
The match has far greater significance for Roma, as they still have an outside chance of reaching a top four spot in Serie A. Claudio Ranieri was brought in to revitalise Roma, and hope that they can secure Champions League football for next season.
Surprisingly though, not AC Milan, but Atalanta have surged to that spot, with Roma three points adrift with three matches to go. Roma dropped two crucial points this past weekend, as they conceded a last minute equaliser to Genoa in a 1-1 draw. Roma were humbled by Napoli at the end of March, but have responded in fantastic fashion, not losing in 6 matches. However, draws need to be turned into wins if they are to topple Atalanta and sneak into the top four.
Forward Stephan El Shaarawy has been in prolific form of late, scoring the last two away goals for his club, but he is struggling to score at home. Can he get his first home goal since early March to help get a famous victory against the champions?
Away Team: Juventus
Juventus season was effectively over a couple of weeks ago when Ajax knocked them out of the Champions League and they don’t even have an Italian Cup final to look forward to either. It’s no surprise that they have only won one in their last five fixtures, with a lot of their players in holiday mode already. One player who didn’t get the memo is Cristiano Ronaldo, who scored once again this weekend, with a leaping header to salvage a 1-1 draw in the Turin derby.
It won’t be long before one day he writes a book about how to perfect a header in football, because he truly is the master. Juventus will hope they won’t drop too many more points as the season draws to a close, or else their 8th consecutive Italian title will start to feel less special, or maybe not.
Head to Head
Juventus have the edge over Roma, having won this fixture five out of the last nine meetings, and have kept clean sheets in four of the last five. However, Roma can boast a better record when they meet at the Stadio Olimpico in recent seasons, as they haven’t lost to Juventus since 2014. Roma beat Juventus in 2017 and 2015, as well as holding them to a 0-0 draw last year. In the reverse fixture this season, Juventus edged out Roma 1-0, with Mario Mandzukic getting the goal.
Predictions and Betting Tips
Roma are slight favourites to win at 7/5, with Juventus priced at 15/8. For the sides to share the spoils, that is at 12/5. It’s a difficult one to call, as we don’t know what Juventus will turn up, but I will go for a home victory here, and will tip a 1-0 home win at 8/1.
Roma haven’t scored many goals against Juventus in recent fixtures, but they did score 3 in this fixture a couple of seasons ago, and for them to repeat that feat, it’s at a generous 4/1. I
t’s always worth betting on Juventus in some capacity, so I’d recommend backing Cristiano Ronaldo to score at any time (19/20), or for them to win either half at 5/6. For the big gains though, do consider backing a HT/FT of Roma/Juventus at a huge 25/1.[geot country="US,CA" ]
