The new Serie A season makes it’s highly anticipated return this weekend, as we see the curtain raiser between Parma and Juventus on Saturday, kicking off at 6:00pm local time in Italy. In previous years, Juventus have found their trip to Parma to always be a challenging one, as we look forward to a tight affair on Saturday.

Home Team: Parma

After a few troublesome years, Parma look to be on their way to becoming an established top-flight side once again. They won the second tier of Italian football back in the 2017/2018 season, and in their return season last year, they managed to finish in 14th position, and were never below 15th in the entirety of the campaign. Parma will hope to kick on from there, and aim to get in the top half of the division. They have already played one competitive fixture so far this season, in the Coppa Italia winning 3-1 against Venezia. Former Arsenal man Gervinho bagged himself two goals in that game, and remains the main threat for his club. He was the top scorer for them last year with 11 goals, and will hope he can make an impact on Saturday.

Away Team: Juventus

Juventus were incredibly dominant in Italy last season, as they started their season is scintillating form. With the addition of world superstar Cristiano Ronaldo, it came to no one’s surprise that they had won the opening 24 out of their 27 league matches, virtually wrapping up the title as early as March. Their focus shifted to the Champions League for the final months, but they were shockingly eliminated to underdogs Ajax in the quarter finals, and they failed to recover. Their final seven league matches of the season saw them only collect 7 points from a possible 21, as they dropped far more points in this spell than they did in their opening 31 matches. New manager Maurizio Sarri will take over from Massimiliano Allegri who wanted a break from football. Sarri’s philosophy on football is a clear contrast, as he will want to encourage his team to be more expansive. Juventus had a busy summer as usual, by bringing in Ajax defender Matthijs De Ligt, Danilo, Cristian Romero, Aaron Ramsey, Adrien Rabiot, as well as re-signing the legendary Gianluigi Buffon.

Head to Head

Juventus haven’t had it all their own way against Parma, as they have only achieved one double over them since the turn of the millennium. In last season’s meetings, they met early on in Parma, which Juventus won 2-1 with Blaise Matuidi getting the winner. In the return fixture back in February, Parma became just the 2nd team of the season to collect a point at the Allianz Stadium with an entertaining 3-3 draw. Despite Juventus winning here on their latest visit, they did lose back in 2015, and 2011 in their restricted meetings in the last decade.

My Predictions and Betting Tips

Parma are at 9/1 to register a victory here, with Juventus priced at 3/10. For the sides to draw, its priced at a reasonable 4/1. With many new signings, new coach and new philosophy, Juventus may not walk away with this game as the bookmakers will suggest. I’d back it to be a repeat score line of last season in a 2-1 away win (7/1), but also may be tempted to put a cheeky bet on the final score line to be 1-1 at 17/2.

To back the favourites, it may be wise betting on riskier options to boost your earnings, so backing them to win with a -1 handicap at 10/11, win to nil at 1/1 (EVENS) or to win both halves at 9/5.

Finally, a repeat of their 3-3 score line this past February of 3-3, is priced at a jaw-dropping 66/1.
