It’s the Derby della Capitale this Sunday, kicking off at 6:00pm local time in Rome, Italy. It’s known as the fiercest rivalry in Italy, and considered one of the fiercest around the globe, as Lazio meet Roma. Who will have bragging rights on Sunday?

Home Team: Lazio

The match will be played at the Stadio Olimpico where both teams play their home matches, but Lazio will be the ones sitting in the home dressing room. Last season, they enjoyed success by winning the Coppa Italia by defeating Atalanta in the final. Therefore, they qualify directly to the Europa League and will participate in the group stage that will get under way next month. If they failed to win the cup final, they would have missed out altogether on Europe as they finished in 8th position in the league.

They did challenge for a top four spot throughout, but their form tailed off with their season. Lazio started this campaign in fantastic fashion, winning 3-0 at Sampdoria this past weekend. A brace from Ciro Immobile and another one added by Joaquin Correa was enough to seal all three points in such an effective performance from the visitors. They’ll be confident ahead of their tie with local rivals Roma.

Away Team: Roma

Semi-finalists of the Champions League in the 2017/2018 season was meant to be a springboard to success for this current crop of Roma players, but last season’s campaign didn’t go as anticipated. Manager Eusebio Di Francesco who took them to the semi-finals as well as a top four finish, started the next season in such poor form, as they were lagging behind the top four. The defence had many issues, and were eventually eliminated from the Champions League at an early stage.

They then re-signed manager Claudio Ranieri with the mission of finishing in the top four, but they failed to reach it by three points meaning the board wanted to bring in new fresh ideas ahead of the season, with Paula Fonseca being named the new coach. He has a tough job on his hands, as they didn’t replace main defender Kostas Manolas in the transfer window yet, as their defence look more than shaky. In the opening match of the season, they played out an entertaining 3-3 draw, with Cengiz Under, Edin Dzeko and Aleksander Kolarov scoring – the latter from a fantastic free kick which hit the underside of the ball before going in. Can they keep their defence tight against Lazio?

Head to Head

The two teams shared a win apiece last season, with Roma winning the first exchange back in September with a 3-1 victory, before Lazio got their revenge with a 3-0 in March. In fact, their record over the last 7 games is 50/50, with them winning three matches each, and there being one solitary 0-0 draw back in 2018. Prior to the last seven matches, Roma could boast a better record being undefeated to Lazio in the league from 2012 to 2017.

My Predictions and Betting Tips

Lazio are priced at 6/5, with Roma priced at 85/40. For the sides to draw, that is backed at 5/2. There is not a lot between the teams, but the bookmakers have made Lazio slight favourites due to their impressive win at Sampdoria. I think it will be a tighter game than most will think, and I’d opt for a 1-1 draw 6/1. For the more adventurous tipsters out there, go for a 2-2 draw at 10/1.

Alternatively, you can back both teams to score in a draw at 3/1 to cover each bet I suggested (and more). You can back Edin Dzeko of Roma and Ciro Immobile of Lazio to both score in a double at 7/1. As it’s a derby, you may want to bet on a player to be sent off, which is currently priced at 4/1.

Finally, for the tipsters…or the dreamers, you can bet on one of the teams to hand out a derby day smashing, with Lazio at 25/1 to score 5+ goals, or Roma at 50/1 to score 5+ goals.
