The Monday night game in the opening weekend of Serie A football will take place at the San Siro, as Inter Milan host Lecce at 9:00pm local time. Inter Milan have ambitions to challenge for the title this season, as will hope to get off to a winning start against the newly promoted Lecce.
Home Team: Inter Milan
Inter Milan managed to finish in that fourth illusive spot in Serie A last season, which qualified them for the Champions League for the 2nd successive season. Keeping themselves in the elite competition has worked wonders for them, as they were able to sign new manager Antonio Conte to replace Luciano Spalletti. He is considered one of the top managers in world football, and has an excellent reputation in Italy with Juventus and the national team. He has managed to attract top class players to his squad too, with Romelu Lukaku, Valentino Lazaro, and Matteo Politano all signing for decent fees to improve the current attack. In addition to that, Inter Milan managed to acquire one of the best defenders in the world, Diego Godin, from Atletico Madrid who joins on a free. Alexis Sanchez may also join before the deadline closes. Can Inter Milan muster a title challenge?[geot exclude_country="US" ][/geot]
Away Team: Lecce
Lecce return to Serie A after having a spell in the 2nd tier of Italian football. In Serie B last season, they started slowly, but their form improved rapidly in the 2nd part of the season as they finished 2nd after holding that position for the last two months. Lecce have managed to keep most of their players, and have brought in a few names to increase their chances of survival this year. Their biggest signing in terms of money, was new left back Romario Benzar from FCSB for £1.8million which shows the gulf between themselves and Inter Milan who had signed Romelu Lukaku for £58million (plus more including incentives). Lecce, who are one of the favourites to go down, will hope to catch Inter Milan unprepared, as they search for an unlikely point here.
Head to Head
Unbelievably, Lecce managed to beat Inter Milan in their most recent meeting back in January 2012. Lecce won their home fixture against Inter that season, winning 1-0. However, in six of the previous seven matches before that, Inter were victorious in meetings between the two clubs. Inter Milan have only won one of their three previous visits to Lecce, but at home, have a 100% record in their last four meetings. Will Inter Milan continue their home winning streak in this fixture? Let’s look at the odds…
My Predictions and Betting Tips
Inter Milan are strong favourites to win at 2/9, with Lecce at 12/1 to get a surprise victory, or 5/1 to earn a credible draw. I’d have to be blunt here, and back Inter Milan to start the season in winning style. Manager Antonio Conte won’t accept anything less, and the crowd will be excited and buoyant about what they can see enfold in front of their eyes this season. I would back a 4-0 score line here at 10/1, and also have a feeling Romelu Lukaku will score 2+ goals (8/1) on his debut, as he did for Manchester United two years ago.
To boost odds on an Inter Milan win, you can back them to win with both teams scoring at 19/10, or to win from behind at 9/1.
Finally, if you believe Lecce can pull of the shock of the weekend, you can back them to win 1-0, 2-0 OR 2-1 at 14/1, which is better than them winning at any score line (which simply won’t happen).[geot exclude_country="US" ][/geot]
