Roma host Lazio in the Rome derby which takes place at 3:00pm on Saturday at local time. It’s usually a ferocious derby between the two, and I hope the fans antics off the pitch will not overshadow events on the pitch. Roma are surprisingly down in 10th position at the moment, as they look up at their bitter rivals Lazio, who currently are sat in third place. Will Roma be able to bridge that gap in this fixture?

Home Team: Roma

Roma surpassed many expectations last season, in domestic form, but more so in their Champions League campaign by reaching the semi-finals whilst knocking out Barcelona in the process. However, with goal keepers having to leave, and some key midfielders too, the new signings are having to adjust and it hasn’t quite materialised for Roma so far this season. In mid-week they were able to get their second win of the season, beating Frosinone 4-0 in a comfortable victory.

The result, and performance, was needed as they had been on such a poor run, not winning in their previous five matches. Whilst that win had reproduced the feel good factor, nothing will put a smile on the Roma fans faces than to defeat their local rivals on Saturday.

Away Team: Lazio

In contrast to Roma, Lazio have had a very satisfying season. They had lost their two opening matches, to last year’s champions Juventus, and runners up Napoli, but since then have been on a fantastic run. Simone Inzaghi has managed to steer his team to five straight victories scoring an average two goals per game.

Lazio have a lot of talent in their squad, with Italian internationals Parolo and Immobile, as well as new signing from Sevilla, Joaquin Correa, who has started to score a few goals for his new club. There is a great feel of confidence with how Lazio play at the moment, and they will hope to further damage Roma’s season significantly whilst propelling theirs. A huge 3 points at stake for them.

Head to Head

Despite playing at the same stadium, Roma are technically the home team in this match, but it would come to you as no surprise that being home or away doesn’t have too much bearing on this particular derby. In the most recent 10 league games, Roma have had the slight upper hand by winning 5 matches, compared to Lazio’s sole victory, which was recent back in 2017. With the other matches being draws, it goes to show that the matches tend to be tight and there is never a lot in between the two teams.

The biggest thrashing from one team to another in the last 10 years was a 4-1 result for Roma back in 2016, but that is hardly a thrashing, but usually most of the time the game is decided by just the one goal. In the two fixtures last season, Roma had won their ‘home’ game 2-1, but the return result was a drab 0-0 affair. Hopefully no repeat on Saturday.

Predictions and Betting Tips

Roma are at 7/5 to win the match, whilst Lazio are slight underdogs at 15/8, with a draw being priced at 12/5. The odds may be somewhat surprising considering the favourite hadn’t won in five matches prior to their last match, and the underdogs are gunning for their 6th win in a row.

Due to that impressive run of form, I am tipping Lazio to cause a minor shock here on Saturday. Lazio to win 1-0, 2-0 or 2-1 (triple selection) is at 10/3 and would be my tip. Roma will hope to pick up from where they left against Frisonse, but Lazio went toe to toe with Napoli and Juventus, and will fancy themselves of winning this derby.

I don’t expect there to be many goals in the fixture, so I would also recommend betting on there to be less than 3.5 goals at 1/2 for a fairly ‘safe’ bet.
