Real Madrid host Rayo Vallecano at the Santiago Bernabeu on Saturday evening, kicking off at 6:30pm local time. It’s a real ‘David vs Goliath’ clash, as the current holders of the Champions League welcome a side who are fighting to avoid being relegated back to second division in Spanish football.

Home Team: Real Madrid

Real Madrid have had a season of many problems including managerial sackings, lack of signings, losing Cristiano Ronaldo, inability to score goals, many shock defeats and embarrassment in the El Clasico. It is quite remarkable though, that despite all the bad publicity, they are only five points behind rivals Barcelona going into this weekend, and if Real Madrid were to win, then they would narrow the gap to only two points, albeit temporarily.

llNot only that, but Real Madrid have also progressed to the last 16 of the Champions League, as they try to win their fourth consecutive crown, and their 14th in their history. In their last outing in the league, they defeated bottom club Huesca 1-0 away from home, in a rather timid display, and now they entertain La Liga’s second bottom club. A win is the most important thing, but only winning 1-0 would still certainly raise questions about their run-of-the-mill attack.

Away Team: Rayo Vallecano

Rayo Vallecano are in 19th position, having collected just 10 points from their opening 15 matches. The side are 4 points behind 17th position, and their chances of staying in La Liga for a second straight year look unlikely at this moment in time. There has been some encouragement in their home performances of late though, as they went toe-to-toe with Barcelona all the way to lose 3-2 in the dying moments of that match, and following that they picked up their first home win against Eibar – a side who had beaten Real Madrid a week before.

Rayo Vallecano’s away form leaves a lot to be desired, as they have only won once, against bottom club Huesca, and only picked up one other point at Real Sociedad. Both of those results came in September, so they are in desperate need of picking up more points on the road. Could they end their torrid away from at the Santiago Bernabeu?

Head to Head

This will be the first meeting since the sides met in the 2015/2016 La Liga campaign. From 2011 to 2016, the sides faced each other 10 times in the league, and Real Madrid won them all, with the majority of them in menacing fashion. In Rayo Vallecano’s most recent visit to the Bernabeu, they lost 10-2 as Gareth Bale ran riot scoring 4 goals in that match. Karim Benzema was also able to get a hat-trick, with Cristiano Ronaldo content with just two goals. Aside from that 10-2 win, Real Madrid have also won 5-1, 5-0, and 6-2 at home in the last decade. Utter supremacy.

Predictions and Betting Tips

Despite the dominance of this recent fixture, Real Madrid are only at 1/7 to win the match. For a monumental away win, you can get it at 14/1, or for a historic draw, it is priced at 13/2. Real Madrid have been goal shy in the majority of their games at home, but I can only see them extending their long winning streak against Rayo Vallecano here, so I am tipping a 3-0 home win at 7/1. Gareth Bale got the only goal in their most recent win, and scored four goals in this fixture three years ago, so backing him to score a brace at 7/1 is certainly worth considering.

Real Madrid have been tight at the back at home, so for them to win and keep a clean sheet is at a generous 1/1 (EVENS). Finally, if you want to back Real Madrid to win, but want to boost your earnings, then back them to win after being level at half time in a Draw/Real Madrid HT/FT bet at 3/1, or alternatively, back them to win with a Goal Handicap of (-3), at 2/1.
