It was the final International Champions Cup game of 2018 for Real Madrid and they finished it off in a style by handing AS Roma a thumping of 2-1. More or less a week from today, both teams will be playing their first match in their respective leagues and that tempted them to field a much stronger starting XI as opposed to the trend that we have seen so far in the ICC’s matches. There was delay due to rain but as it stopped, Real Madrid started their march to yet another win in the tournament.

Marcos Asensio’s opener

With Ronaldo no more around for Real Madrid and in the absence of Luka Modric, Gareth Bale stepped up his game and in the opening minutes gave Marcos Asensio a gorgeous pass over the Roma defense. Asensio has a caliber to put those balls graciously inside the nets and he obliged with a left foot strike. The early opener inside the second minute left Roma’s defense in tatters as several attacks followed.

Bale doubled the lead

Dani Carvajal’s long ball was very neatly collected by Gareth Bale, and then turned left from the right wing and finally putting the ball past Olsen for his team’s second goal. The class of Bale was prominent in the style he finished this goal and the Champion’s League holders would have pinned high hopes with him this time around.

Appeals turned down

Edin Dzeko was fouled inside Real Madrid penalty area but the referee thought it as a safe tackle. Later in the first half Marcos Asensio’s shot felt like it was handled but this time again the appeal was denied and the first half ended with Real Madrid on the driver’s seat.

Vinicius Jr. in action

As against Juventus, Real Madrid brought in their new signing Vinicius Jr. and the young Brazilian was again looking at his very best running Roma ragged in the second half of the game. His right footed strike was heading to the goal but due to curl that he put in, missed by the slightest of margins. After 75 minutes of play, the game became more intense and Roma started fighting for the ball in the midfield area. Real Madrid had a chance from a substitute Jose Leon with a corner, but it was a mere chance rather than anything else.

Strootman ignited Roma’s hopes

In the last 10 minutes of the game, Strootman and Roma decided to add a twist in the tale. Patrik Schick missed a header that would have been a great opportunity but then headed a pass to Strootman who confidently put that one in the nets as if saying, ‘we are not just giving it up as yet!’ But they had to give it up at last when the time ran out as they hoped for a last-minutes-come-back.

Real Madrid having won both of their preseason encounters will start their season with the UEFA Super Cup clash against Atletico Madrid on August 15. AS Roma will play their first season match on 19th August in a Serie A fixture and they will hope not to feel the absence of Alisson –their prominent goal keeper of last season.
