The Premier League weekend starts with Southampton meeting Manchester United at St Mary’s, kicking off on Saturday at 12:30pm. Both sides will enter this game in contrasting moods, as Southampton picked up a vital win at Brighton, whereas Manchester United were humbled at home to Crystal Palace. How will this game pan out?

Home Team: Southampton

Manager Ralph Hasenhüttl was disappointed with how Southampton were badly beaten by Burnley on the opening weekend, but their two most recent performances have given the side a lot of encouragement going into this fixture. They gave Liverpool a tough game and were narrowly beaten on the day, and this past weekend, they got their first points on the board with a win over Brighton. Southampton were up against only 10 players for the majority of the game, and they used their advantage effectively with Moussa Djenepo scoring his first goal of the club, before Nathan Redmond sealed the victory in the final moments. Southampton won’t make it easy for Manchester United, and will fancy themselves of taking some points.

Away Team: Manchester United

Manchester United’s shock home defeat to Crystal Palace was perhaps something that no one saw coming. After battering Chelsea 4-0, and then being a tad unlucky not to beat Wolves away, many had anticipated Manchester United were going to cruise to victory over Crystal Palace. However, the bleak signs we saw at the end of last season came back into their game again. David de Gea made a huge uncharacteristic mistake, Pogba gave the ball away for Palace’s goal, Rashford missed a penalty, the defence looked shaky, and the majority of players looked unimaginative when going forward.

The only spark for Manchester United was Daniel James scoring a curling beauty, which almost rescued a point for the hosts. The pressure will now be on Ole Gunnar Solskjaer who has only won three games in the last 15. Can they bounce back with an impressive result at Southampton?

Head to Head

Manchester United don’t usually have too much trouble at Southampton, as they haven’t lost away to them since 2003 – funnily enough on August 31st when this game will take place. In matches since then at St Mary’s, Manchester United have won their 8 times out of their last 11 visits.

Jose Mourinho was the manager on their last two trips to St Mary’s, with both games ending in a draw, with last year’s meeting finishing 2-2. The last time the two sides faced each other was back in March, when Manchester United won 3-2 with Romelu Lukaku scoring a late goal to win it for the hosts. Southampton’s last success against Manchester United was in 2016, but it came at Old Trafford instead.

My Predictions and Betting Tips

Southampton are at 13/5 to win, with Manchester United at 21/20. For the sides to draw – as they have done in the last two seasons – is priced at 12/5. Manchester United fans shouldn’t feel confident, especially as Anthony Martial is rumoured to be out injured. The best value here would be to back a draw for an outright result, and my score line prediction will be 1-1 at 11/2.

For goal scorers, I’d back Marcus Rashford to score for Manchester United (11/10 at any time), and for the hosts, I’d back Nathan Redmond (11/4 at any time). Keeping a clean sheet doesn’t happen so often for either side, so backing both teams to score at 8/11 seems a safe bet. Alternatively, you can back both teams to score in both halves at a generous 9/1. If I had to pick a winner, it seems fate that the date of this fixture matches Southampton’s last win here, so backing them to win in a HT/FT bet of Draw / Southampton is at valuable 7/1.

Finally, Manchester United have missed two penalties in their last two games, and are at 12/1 to make that three weeks in a row. Surely won’t happen, right?
