Liverpool welcome Wolves on the final day of the Premier League, kicking off at 3:00pm local time on Sunday. A nail-biting title race comes down to the last day, as Liverpool hope to win this encounter, and hope to hear positive news from Manchester City’s visit to Brighton.
Home Team: Liverpool
Liverpool will be in buoyant mood on Sunday, after their heroic 4-0 win over Barcelona in mid-week. Goals from Divock Origi and Georginio Wijnaldum saw them complete the most incredible comeback, that surely not even the most ardent Liverpool fan would have anticipated.
Knowing that they will go to Madrid in June to fight for a 6th European crown, it will certainly soften the blow if they don’t become Premier League champions on Sunday. As well as a place in the Champions League final, they are also in a ‘Premier League Final’, as manager Jurgen Klopp referred to this match.
Late wins in recent months against Tottenham, Southampton and recently against Newcastle as kept Liverpool in touching distance of the title, but remain one point behind with just one game to go. A win against Wolves would take their winning streak 9 consecutive matches, and avoiding defeat would mean they would go the whole season only losing one match in the league.
Can Liverpool get the win, and potentially their first league title in 29 years?
Away Team: Wolves
There have been a lot of plaudits handed out to Manchester City and Liverpool throughout the course of the year, but Wolves are another team who have had a sensational season. Straight from winning the Championship last season, they have surged into the top half of the Premier League table, and last week guaranteed their 7th placed position in the league.
If Watford lose to Manchester City in the FA Cup final, then the Europa League qualification place will be handed to the team 7th in the table, meaning Wolves would seal the deal. They were bitterly disappointed with their FA Cup semi-final defeat, but have reacted well and are finishing the season strongly.
Wolves come into the final game having won their last three matches, and also boast the best record against the top six sides, outside the top six. Wolves will not be pushovers on this occasion.
Head to Head
Liverpool should be cautious heading into the match, as they don’t boast an overly dominant record over Wolves, particularly in the FA Cup. Wolves have knocked out Liverpool of the FA Cup in two of the last three seasons including this year, but thankfully for Liverpool, they have had a lot more joy in the Premier League.
In the reverse fixture this season, Virgil van Dijk and Mohammed Salah scored a goal apiece to win 2-0, and they have also won there on their two previous visits. At Anfield, Liverpool have beaten Wolves on three occasions out of 4 in the Premier League, with Wolves last winning back in 2010.
Predictions and Betting Tips
Liverpool are favourites at 1/3 to get a victory, with Wolves at 17/2. For the visitors to earn a damaging draw, that is priced at 4/1. Personally, I think Liverpool are unbeatable at the moment, particularly at home.
Despite Wolves having a fantastic record against the top sides, Liverpool will deal with them just as they did to Tottenham, Chelsea and Barcelona in recent weeks. My score line prediction will be 4-0 at 12/1. Mohammed Salah will return for the Reds, and I’d back him to score a brace to guarantee himself becoming the top goal scorer in the league by bagging a brace at 5/1.
For the visitors, you can get fantastic value backing anyone, but I’d tip Diogo Jota at 7/2 to score at any time. To boost odds on a home win, you can simply bet on them to win to nil at 11/10.
Finally, if you would like to back Wolves in some capacity, or think they can frustrate the hosts, back them to lose by just 1-goal margin at 11/4 or win either half at 10/3.[geot country="US,CA" ]
