Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho hosts his former player and friend Frank Lampard at Old Trafford, as Derby are the visitors in this 3rd round League Cup tie. Will Frank Lampard get one over his old manager, and heap more pressure on the Portuguese manager? This league cup tie means more than just a place in the fourth round.

Home Team: Manchester United

manchester united betting on footballJose Mourinho and Manchester United fans would like to wake up now and return to August, after their nightmare to the 2018/2019 campaign. The season has started well under-par for their expectations as they are already lagging behind bitter rivals Manchester City and Liverpool in the title race.

Some will say that they are already out of the title race, as their performances on the pitch are not improving. The likes of Sanchez, Lukaku, Martial and co are not performing to their abilities, and maybe the time is running out on the special one?

Thankfully, Jose Mourinho has a game on Tuesday night to restore some feel good factor, and a comfortable win, and progression in the cup may be able to lift some pressure for a few days.

Elimination would be unthinkable.

Away Team: Derby County

Derby County, on the other hand, will be relatively pleased with the start to their campaign. New life and optimism was flowing through the club, as England favourite Frank Lampard had taken over in the summer. Despite the odd poor performance, Derby find themselves in 6th place in the league, a play-off position and just two points off the top.

In the previous round of the Carabao Cup, they defeated Hull away 4-0 and they won their last game out in the league against Brentford at the weekend 3-1. Derby’s main focus this season will be to get promotion to the Premier League, but the chance of visiting Old Trafford doesn’t come often and they’ll want to spring a huge cup shock.

Head to Head

Despite Derby County not having played top flight football since 2008, they have still managed to unlucky enough to face Manchester United five times in cup competitions since then. Two of the five cup ties was a two-legged semi-final in this competition back in 2009, where Derby had surprisingly won the first match 1-0, but only to lose the second leg 4-2 and therefore eliminated at the final hurdle.

They have also faced each other three times in the FA Cup in 2009, 2016 and 2018, with Manchester United winning all of them, 4-1, 3-1, and 2-0 respectively. Derby have been a bogey side of Manchester United’s in the past though, and did win at Old Trafford in 1997 and 2001.

Can they win against all the odds again?

Manchester United vs Derby County Predictions and Betting Tips

Manchester United are overwhelming favourites at 2/9 to get the win tonight, with Derby at 12/1, and a draw at 5/1. Extra time and penalties will be played tonight if required, so if you fancy betting on who to qualify instead, then Manchester United are at 1/10 with Derby at 11/2.

If you feel that Derby will frustrate Manchester United and take them to penalties, you can get either side to win via penalties at 11/1. It’s likely that Mourinho’s dig at his attacking players will suggest that they will have this game to prove themselves, so a backlash from the likes of Sanchez and Lukaku is likely, and therefore I would bet on a 3-0 win tonight for the home side, which is priced at 5/1.

If you feel that it will be a tight home win, then you can bet on Manchester United winning 1-0, 2-0 OR 2-1 at 13/8.
