Lyon host Marseille in the highly anticipated Ligue 1 clash this weekend. The fixture is always an eventful one as both sides have great prestige in the league’ history and always tipped to challenge for the league title. Lyon and Marseille finished third and fourth last season respectively, and the two go head to head at 21:00 local time on Sunday night.

Home Team: Lyon

Lyon have had a disappointing start to the season only amounting to seven points from their opening five games. Lyon’s only wins this season have come at home to Amiens and Strasbourg, two games they would have expected to win.

However, what was not expected was their poor result at home to Nice last weekend, losing 1-0, the same score line as their previous defeat to Stade Reims in the second game of the season, and also a 2-2 result with Caen sandwiched in between. Moussa Dembele, signed from Celtic, is the main front man for Lyon, but he is yet to get a goal so far this season.

Other recognizable stars include French World Cup winner Fekir, and former Manchester United striker, Memphis Depay. Lyon will hope to put their wretched league form to bed and pull off a great result here.

Away Team: Marseille

marseille bet on footballAlthough Lyon had pipped Marseille for the 3rd place last season, and therefore that final Champions League place, but Marseille were able to boast that they were able to have a more dignified run in the Europa League. Marseille had reached the final, in Lyon’s home ground which is the venue for this weekend’s match-up, but had lost to an in-form Atletico Madrid 3-0. Marseille have to settle for Europa League again, and hoping to earn a higher position in the league.

After only gaining four points from the first three games, they have won their last two games and sit in 3rd place, 5 points off the top spot. Marseille won 3-2 at Monaco in recent weeks, and will hope to get another fine away performance to make another statement this season. Payet is the captain and main man still for the side supplying the likes of Mitroglou, and French international Florian Thauvin to threaten their opponent’s defences.

Head to Head

Last season, Lyon had finished one point ahead of Marseille to get that third illusive place in the Champions League. When the two sides met last year, Lyon were victorious on both occasions winning 3-2 away and winning 2-0 at home. If Marseille had avoided defeat in one of those games, they would have finished higher than Lyon in the league.

Prior to that, there has been little to decide the two teams in their head to head records. From 2015 to 2017, they had drawn 5 times in a row, three 0-0 draws, and two 1-1 draws. Marseille haven’t beaten Lyon since 2014 and haven’t won at Lyon since 2007, which was a 2-1 success at that time.

Lyon vs Marseille Predictions and Betting Tips

With this fixture being a draw 8 of the last 13 times, then the odds of 13/5 may sound the most appealing.

Lyon are slight favourites however, at 6/5 to get the win, with Marseille priced at 21/10. It’s expected to be cagey as the two sides meet, and for my desire to watch entertaining football games, I don’t tend to recommend a 0-0 draw, but at 14/1 that would be my tip for this encounter.

Marseille haven’t won at Lyon for 11 years, but their recent away win at Monaco will give them confidence, so tipping them to win a narrow 1-0 at 12/1 should be considered. It may be just one goal that decides this fixture so, betting against both teams scoring at 13/8 also looks generous.
