Mane and van Dijk give Liverpool 3 more points

It was a tight game at Crystal Palace but tight were Liverpool as well in their defence as they wrapped up the victory with the margin of 2 goals. James Milner scored on a penalty and then Sadio Mane score in the closing minutes to win the match for Liverpool.

Roberto Firmino occupied the centre-forward spot and Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane were on both sides supporting him. But it was not the attack that made Liverpool prominent this time, it was their defense that was a spotlight. Last season it was in the defense that Liverpool lacked, but on Monday Virgil Van Dijk was at his best and fulfilled his role diligently. He got nice support from Andy Robertson as well. Goal-keeper Alisson also saved a couple of good chances and showed an overall accomplished performance to get a second clean sheet in their second game of the season.

The win was quite sweet, but it didn’t come easy, as Liverpool had to fight till the last minutes to book 3 points for them. With 6 points in the first two games and an overall sound team combination, Liverpool are thought to be the real title contenders this time around. They will have to compete with other teams consistently, especially the defending champions Manchester City. Though it’s a visible reality, but Jurgen Klopp dismissed any such talks.

Klopp said after the game;

“It’s very early. I couldn’t care less really. We are not in a race with other Premier League teams each weekend. I was not 100 percent sure tonight in the first half that we would score,”

“You have to play it as it is and be a real challenger, play ugly, do all that type of stuff. Our target is to be a difficult opponent. It is too soon to say anything after two match days. You can discuss whatever you want – just do it without us.”

And right he was, after all they have to take one game at a time and remaining composed and consistent for the entire season is quite an ask. But this was a game from which Liverpool can take a lot of positives. Virgil van Dijk and defense showed a lot of promise as they successfully defended everything that Palace threw on them. Crystal Palace started aggressively and created early chances. Andros Townsend especially was quick and accurate and came very close to scoring, but unluckily for him he hit the bar.

But then Muhammad Salah was tripped in the penalty area by Mamadou Sakho late in the first half and Liverpool were awarded a penalty. James Milner converted with a neat strike and got the vital lead for the visitors.

Just with 15 minutes to play Aaron Wan-Bissaka fouled Mohammed Salah depriving him of a clear scoring chance. He then was sent off and Crystal Palace had to play with 10 men for the rest of the match.

And then came the stoppage time and then the Mane goal. Sadio Mane collected a pass from Salah and skipped past Palace defenders and the goalkeeper with great skill before guiding it in the nets. It was the second goal for Liverpool which confirmed their second win this season.
