Marseille host Monaco this Sunday evening at the Orange Vélodrome, kicking off at 9:00pm local time. For different reasons, both sides have had disappointing seasons so far, and will hope that the New Year will bring new fortunes to their club.

Home Team: Marseille

Marseille’s surprise exit in the French Cup to Andrezieux this past Saturday compounded an already unsatisfactory season. Beaten 2-0 by lower league opposition was an embarrassment, as they have been knocked out of all three cup competitions by early January. The Europa League, where they reached last year’s final, was short lived as they got knocked out in the group stage, as well as being knocked out of the French League cup prior to Christmas.

The only thing that Marseille can play for now this season is a Champions League position in the league but even that seems a tall order with the form that they are producing. Due to games being cancelled, and a winter break, the games haven’t come thick and fast of late for Marseille, as they have had to wait almost 2 months for a home victory. Can they end that dreaded run and instil some life into their season this upcoming Sunday?

Away Team: Monaco

Whilst Marseille’s season has been poor, Monaco’s has been catastrophic. The only glimmer of joy Monaco have received is that they qualified for the last 32 in the French Cup, but manager Thierry Henry knows that their league form, prior to his appointment, and after, has been appalling. The lowest point for Monaco was losing at home to fellow relegation candidates Guingamp just before Christmas in a 2-0 defeat.

Monaco are four points adrift of safety, and they are in serious danger of being relegated, despite being the French champions just two years ago. Thierry Henry has won just two league games so far, and will hope that the New Year can turn around his sides fortunes, and being able to win at a big ground in Marseille, and that may be the catalyst for change at the club.

Head to Head

Monaco have had the edge on this fixture in recent years, as they have only lost twice in the last 12 meetings between the two sides. Monaco have been unbeaten on their last 3 visits to Marseille, including a 4-1 victory in their title winning campaign. In fact, Marseille’s last win at home in this fixture came in 2015, and before that was back in 2007, showing that they find wins hard to come by against Monaco. This will be the second time the sides have met this season, as they first met back in September. On that occasion, Marseille won an entertaining match 3-2 as Valere Germain scored a last minute winner to haunt his old team.

Prediction and Betting Tips

[geot exclude_country=”US,CA” ]bet now betting on football[/geot]Marseille are 4/7 favourites to get the win here, with struggling Monaco at 9/2. For the sides to cancel each other out and draw, that is priced at 16/5. It’s hard to pick a winner here with both sides going through a bit of turmoil, but I will pick Marseille to win, as they will want to bounce back from their embarrassing cup exit, and show some passion to their home fans. My score prediction will be a home 2-0 win, at 7/1.

[geot country=”US,CA” ]bet now betting on football[/geot]A halftime/fulltime bet is always a good way of winning big on a hard match to call, so I would recommend Monaco/Marseille bet, meaning Monaco would lead at half time, but to lose at full time which is at a generous 18/1. Marseille are at 11/8 to keep a clean sheet at home, and are at 7/4 to score 3+ goals. Both can easily happen if they are to find some form in this match, which I am anticipating (and hoping) as they need a reaction.
