Portugal will play their second game of their UEFA EURO 2020 qualification against Serbia, kicking off at 7:45pm local time on Monday night. The visitors will play their first match of the group, as they will be given a rest on match-day one. The other teams contesting the group include Ukraine, Lithuania and Luxembourg.

Home Team: Portugal

Portugal welcomed the return of Cristiano Ronaldo to their team on Friday night to play their group opener against Ukraine. However, it didn’t help them as they were left frustrated by a valiant Ukrainian team. The match finished 0-0 in Portugal, so as the visitors would be delighted, the hosts will know that this match against Serbia now has more importance. Portugal had 18 shots to Ukraine’s two shots, but the ball just wouldn’t go in the net for the hosts, and the luck wasn’t on their side.

If Portugal were to somehow fail to qualify automatically in the group, then they do have a play-off to fall-back on if required. Portugal’s closest challengers in the group are Ukraine and Serbia, so if they fail to beat either two in home matches at the beginning of their campaign, then they will be in for a struggle for the remainder of their matches. Can Portugal bounce back with a victory here?

Away Team: Serbia

Serbia will come into this qualifying stage after winning their UEFA Nations League group last autumn. They won their group, which means that if they fail to qualify as a top two side in the group, they are guaranteed at least a play-off for the European Championships next summer. Serbia have a fully capable side of progressing and it won’t be an easy opponent for Portugal. In the World Cup last summer, they won one match against Costa Rica, before narrowly losing to Switzerland and Brazil which condemned them to their exit.

The fans will be disappointed having not progresses to the latter stages for the first time in their short history, but were far from disgraced. Serbia played a friendly on Wednesday night against Germany away from home, and managed to a hard earned 1-1 draw with Luka Jolic scoring their goal. The squad will be slightly depleted with the absence of Manchester United midfielder Nemanja Matic, but can rely on the experience of talented striker Aleksandar Mitrovic.

Head to Head

The sides have faced each other four times in their history, with Serbia yet to beat Portugal. The first meetings ended in 1-1 stalemates when they met in the qualifying stages for the European Championships in 2008. Their most recent meetings were in the qualifying stages for the European Championships in 2016, as Portugal won both matches by a 2-1 score line. In the latter match, held in Serbia, both Nemanja Matic and Aleksander Kolarov were sent off, as Joao Moutinho scored the winner.

Predictions and Betting Tips

bet now betting on footballPortugal are at 4/7 to get a victory in this match, with Serbia underdogs at 9/2. For the sides to share the spoils, that is priced at 14/5. I think that if Portugal are to replicate their performance against Ukraine, they could end up winning this match by a few goals. Therefore, I’d predict a 3-0 home win here, at 11/1. To boost the odds even further, you can add Cristiano Ronaldo as the first goal scorer in a Scorecast, that increases it to 22/1.

Portugal are at 6/5 to be winning at half time, at 10/11 to keep a clean sheet, and at 5/6 to score 2+ goals, which are all to be considered. Finally, if you believe Serbia can cause a shock and walk away with at least a point as Ukraine did, you can back them to win or draw at 5/4 in a double chance bet.
