Montenegro host England on match day two in a European Championship qualifying group match, kicking off at 8:45pm local time, on Monday night. Montenegro see themselves as underdogs to qualify for the tournament, whereas England will hope to win the finals tournament next summer.

Home Team: Montenegro

Montenegro are one of the newest teams in international football, having been accepted by FIFA and UEFA in 2007. Previously they were a part of Yugoslavia, and more recently were coupled with Serbia to make the national team ‘Serbia & Montenegro’. However, despite having such a small population, they have been performing above expectations by being extremely competitive in all of their qualifying groups for each major tournament, and even secured a play-off spot in the European Championship qualification in 2012 – but unfortunately lost to Czech Republic.

In the UEFA Nations League last autumn, they finished 3rd in their group which contained Serbia and Romania. The most recognisable player for Montenegro is defender Stefan Savic, who currently plays for Spanish club Atletico Madrid, but most of their other players play locally, in Serbia or in other minor European leagues.

Away Team: England

England’s reign under Gareth Southgate has been fantastic, and they started their European Championship qualifying in similar fashion, by demolishing Czech Republic 5-0 in the group opener on Friday night. This modern English side, who has pace, trickery, and excitement throughout the team, has raised the expectations of the English faithful, and now will have confidence they can bring some silverware in the coming years.

England will participate at the UEFA Nations Finals in the summer, and will consider themselves slight favourites given their form over the past 18 months. On Friday night, Raheem Sterling scored his first ever England hat-trick, as he was in menacing form throughout, scoring poaching goals, and excellent finishes. England should progress from the group comfortably, but would want to target a 100% record in their qualifying phrase, to really make a statement ahead of the major tournament next summer.

Head to Head

The sides have met four times in the past, and rather surprisingly there hasn’t been too much between the teams in all previous encounters. The first three matches ended in a draw, with the score lines as 0-0, 1-1 and then 2-2. England finally managed to beat Montenegro at the fourth time of asking, as they beat them 4-1 in the qualifying stages for the World Cup in 2014. Wayne Rooney was famously sent off in England’s first visit here, and usually a visit to the city of Podgorica usually ends in disappointment for England. Can they finally win this fixture, or will Montenegro stand firm again?

Predictions and Betting Tips

bet now betting on footballMontenegro are at 5/1 to get the win here, with England favourites at 8/15, and a draw at 14/5. England haven’t won here in their last two visits, but given the quality of the current teams, England should manage to edge out a victory here. Montenegro will defend deeply, and try to frustrate England in a hostile environment, but I see England taking a 2-0 victory, priced at 9/2.

I think that England will take its time in scoring, so I’d suggest backing them to score from minutes 46-55 at 11/4. Raheem Sterling is in fantastic form, so should be backed to score at any time at 11/10. To boost your odds on scorers, I’d recommend tipping Jadon Sancho to score first at 5/1. Finally, for the sides to be drawing at half time, and then England to win at full time, (Draw/England) is at 11/4, and would be my final tip.
