Hungary host Wales on Tuesday night in their European Championship Group E match, kicking off at 8:45pm local time. In a tight and fascinating group, both sides will be desperate to get a huge result here to aid their qualification bid.

Home Team: Hungary

Hungary managed to taste some major summer tournament football back in 2016, and would hope to experience it again – particularly as their home stadium is one of the grounds that is hosting the tournament. In 2016, they managed to stay undefeated in their group containing Iceland, Austria and Portugal as they progressed to the 2nd round, where they were humbled by Belgium. Hungary didn’t manage to win their UEFA Nations League group, so they are not guaranteed a play-off if they finish below the top three positions. After three games in, they are sitting in a decent position, having beaten Croatia in their most recent home match, and then beating Azerbaijan this past Saturday. Their one poor result came on the opening match day, as they lost 2-0 to Slovakia – who lost to Wales. It’s all to play for in this group!

Away Team: Wales

After waiting over 50 years to qualify for a major tournament, Wales fully delivered as they exceeded expectations at Euro 2016, reaching the semi-finals. Gareth Bale inspired Wales during that tournament, and the pressure will be on the man shoulder’s again to deliver. He’s had a tough season at Real Madrid, but he’ll want to finish the season with some points that will help Wales in their quest to qualify for next summer’s Championships. Ryan Giggs was disappointed with Wales’s defeat at Croatia this past Saturday, as they fell to a 2-1 defeat. They’ll have to bounce back in another tough fixture here in Hungary, or else they’ll be in a struggling position. New Manchester United signing Daniel James will look to start again, and hope to improve on his performance against Croatia. Can Wales avoid a 2nd consecutive defeat?

Head to Head

The sides have met 10 times in their past with Wales edging it with 5 wins, to Hungary’s three successes. They have only met twice since the turn of the millennium, and both of those fixtures were over 15 years ago, with Wales winning on both occasions, including an away fixture. The last times they played competitively was way back in the 1970’s. Wales enjoyed success then too, winning in Hungary in the qualification for the European Championship in 1976. Hungary haven’t beaten Wales at home since 1962, one year after their first win against Wales at home.

Predictions and Betting Tips

It’s a close game to call with Hungary at 19/10, and Wales at 13/8. For the sides to draw, that is priced at 2/1. I was tempted to sit on the fence for this one, but instead I am going to back Hungary to get a victory here. They stunned Croatia at home on match day two, so they are more than capable of getting a critical result here. My score line prediction will be 2-0 at a generous 12/1. To boost odds even further, I’d suggest that captain Balazs Dzsudzsak will score first in that score line at 55/1. I’ve been bold and predicted that Hungary will keep a clean sheet (7/4), but both teams have recently scored and conceded in recent matches, and for both teams to score, that is priced at 1/1 (EVENS). If you are going to back the Welsh, I’d suggest betting on Gareth Bale to score at any time – he’s due a goal – at 17/10. Finally, despite it not being my gut prediction, do consider that Wales have the potential to show a commanding performance, as they are at 17/2 to win both halves. Worth a bet for the tipsters.
