Lazio and Atalanta meet in this year’s Coppa Italia final, kicking off on Wednesday night at 8:45pm local time. The final is always staged at the Stadio Olimpico in Rome, meaning Lazio will be playing on their own pitch, so will that give them the advantage?

Home Team: Lazio

Lazio will be attempting to win their 7th Italian Cup in their history, which would make them the 4th most successful team ever in this competition. It’s the fourth time they have been in the final in the last decade, but they have lost the last two, and won most recently in 2013.

On their route to the final, they had to beat 3rd tier team Novara 4-1 in the round of 16, before meeting Inter Milan in the quarter finals. At the San Siro, Lazio matched Inter the whole way in a 1-1 draw, as it went to a penalty shootout with Lazio winning 4-3. Their semi-final saw them visit Milan again, but this time it was AC, and after two cagey legs, Lazio went to Milan for the 2nd leg and won 1-0 with Joaquin Correa scoring the only goal.

Lazio look set to miss out on European places within the league in 8th place, so a win here would guarantee them of that, as well as picking up some silverware which is due for the club.

Away Team: Atalanta

Atalanta are having one of their most ever successful seasons, as they look to win the Italian Cup for just the 2nd time in their history, after their 1963 success.

They have been tremendous in reaching the final after beating Cagliari in the round of 16 before meeting defending champions Juventus in the quarter final stage. Atalanta inflicted a defeat on Juventus, ending their expected domestic treble with a 2-0 win. In an entertaining semi-final affair, Atalanta overcome Fiorentina 5-4 on aggregate, following a first leg 3-3 away draw and then a home 2-1 win for Atalanta.

Beyond all expectations, Atalanta could even reach the Champions League next season, as they find themselves 3 points ahead of 5th two just two matches remaining. They’ll need at least 4 points from their final two matches against Juventus, and Sassuolo to guarantee it, which will be far from easy. First though, it’s a huge night in the club’s history as they look to win the Coppa Italia.

Head to Head

The record between the two teams is relatively even in the last 5 years, with Atalanta having more joy this season. Lazio did beat Atalanta three times in a row during 2016 and 2017 including a 4-3 classic, but in the last four meetings, Atalanta haven’t lost to Lazio, and managed to do the double on them this season.

Atalanta narrowly beat Lazio 1-0 at home back in December and the sides met again as recently as last week, as Atalanta came from behind to win 3-1 away from home, which took them into the top four for the first time this season.

The sides have only met once in this competition this side of the millennium, and it was Lazio who enjoyed a 2-0 win on that occasion, in the quarter finals back in 2008.

Predictions and Betting Tips

There is nothing to separate the two teams, with Atalanta at 8/5 to win, and Lazio are at 13/8. For the game to be a draw, and therefore go into extra time, that is at 12/5.

On current form, it’s hard to back against Atalanta who are flying at the moment. They will feel that they are already overachieving in the league, and perhaps there is less pressure on them here than most would think. I would back them to get a 1-0 win here at 9/1. Other great value bets for this match would be to back either team to win to nil at 4/1, under 2.5 goals at 1/1 or backing Atalanta striker Duván Zapata to score at any time at 11/10.

Finally, for the tipsters, the big money can be won on guessing the correct HT/FT combination, as I’d back Draw/Atalanta at 5/1, or backing either team to win after extra time (11/1) or penalties (12/1).
