Uruguay meet Peru in the last quarter final of Copa America 2019, kicking off on Saturday afternoon at 4:00pm local time in Salvador, Brazil, meaning it will be an 8:00pm kick of viewers in the UK.
Uruguay were at their robust best in their final game against Chile in the group. Following a disappointing draw with an inexperienced Japan side, Uruguay needed a win against Chile to secure top spot in the group, and an easier quarter final tie. Uruguay allowed Chile to have more possession, and even more shots at their goal, but Uruguay looked equally dangerous when they had players supporting the likes of Edison Cavani and Luis Suarez.
With less than 10 minutes left on the clock, Uruguay provided the killer blow, as Cavani’s header surged past the keeper, as they went on to win 1-0 against the champions. Uruguay’s strengths are their experience, ability to manage games well, and to hurt you on the break. This current generation has been doing it for years, and now many will tip them as 2nd favourites to win the tournament, after the hosts Brazil. Can they overcome Peru in the quarters?
Peru come into this quarter final off the back of a devastating 5-0 loss at the hands of Brazil. Three years ago they had beaten Brazil, but were simply outclassed this past Saturday, as they fell to 3rd place in the group. Thankfully for them, results in the other groups went their way, as they secured a passage to the quarter finals by being one of the best 3rd place teams with 4 points. That was largely helped due to their 3-1 win over Bolivia in the 2nd match day, as Paulo Guerrero, Jefferson Farfan and Edison Flores scored their only goals in the tournament so far. Peru have won this competition twice in their history before, with their most recent win in 1975, and even the most ardent Peruvian will know they need some assurance in the defence before we can count them as a dark horse. Can they get a surprise quarter final victory here?[geot exclude_country="US" ][/geot]
Head to Head
Uruguay have the dominant record here with 37 wins to Peru’s 16. In the last 10 matches, Uruguay have the upper hand to with five wins, two draws, with Peru winning three – including their last meeting in 2017 in a World Cup Qualification match. In Copa America history, they have met three times since the turn of the millennium and share an even record. Peru beat Uruguay 3-0 in the 2007 edition in the group stage, and in 2011 they met twice. It was a 1-1 draw in the group stage, before Uruguay won 2-0 in the semi-finals, before eventually going on to win the tournament.
Predictions and Betting Tips
Uruguay are at 8/11 to win, with Peru as slight underdogs at 4/1. For the sides to draw and therefore go into extra time, that is priced at 5/2. To qualify, Uruguay are at 4/11 with Peru at 2/1. Backing Uruguay would be the wise option here, as I can see their experience and world-class quality taking them through to the next stage.
Peru have just lost 5-0 to Brazil, so it will be hard for them to pick themselves after that disappointing showing. My score line prediction would be a 2-0 Uruguay win at 13/2. To boost odds even further, you can add Luis Suarez to score first in a Scorecast of that result, backed at 16/1. Uruguay tend to keep a clean sheet when truly focused, so I’d tip them to win to nil at 13/8, and you will be rewarded if you back them to be clinical in front of goal, so backing them to score 3+ goals at 10/3, or 4+ goals at 10/1 should be considered.
Finally, if you would like to back Peru in some capacity, you can bet on striker Paolo Guerrero to score in a draw in 90 minutes – therefore earning extra time – in a 11/1 bet.[geot country="US,CA" ]
