Colombia and Chile go head to head in the quarter finals in the 2019 Copa America, kicking off on Friday night at 8:00pm local time in Sao Paulo, Brazil, which is midnight for viewers in the UK. Colombia are the only team with a 100% winning record in the competition, as they meet the defending champions.

Colombia

Colombia have been the stand out team in the tournament so far, winning all three of their group matches, and have yet to concede a goal. Manager Carlos Queiroz has a reputation for building solid defences, and he looks to have conjured up a formula to keep Colombia a resolute block, with dangerous players when in possession of the ball. They shocked the world with a 2-0 victory over Argentina in the opening game which really set them on their way, before overcoming Qatar and Paraguay by 1-0 score lines in their next two games to keep their 100% record going. Stars such as James Rodriguez and Duvan Zapata were rested against Paraguay, so they’ll restore their place in the team for a huge quarter final match. Colombia haven’t won this tournament since they hosted it in 2001, but the nation truly believes they can go all the way and win it.

Chile

Chile’s defence of their crown started in superb style, as they swept aside the inexperienced Japan, before getting a hard-fought victory against Ecuador. In the final match of the group with Uruguay, all they needed to do was avoid defeat to secure top spot, and therefore an easier tie in the quarter final stage. However, despite dominating possession and having more shots at their oppositions goal, they couldn’t break through.

At the other end, Chile let Edison Cavani of Uruguay unmarked, as he headed in a late winner, which condemned Chile to a defeat. Now, Chile will have to prepare for a tough quarter final against the most in-form team at this tournament – Colombia. Chile will still fancy their chances as their performances have been decent so far, and their star players haven’t been as poor as people were expecting (i.e. Alexis Sanchez). Can they defend their crown a few more days at least by beating the dark horses of the tournament?

Head to Head

These two nations have met 39 times in their history, with Chile edging Colombia with 15 wins to 10. Chile have also had the better of fixtures between these two teams in recent years, losing just one match in the last 8. In three of the last four meetings, the matches have ended in stalemates as there isn’t usually much between the sides. In Copa America history, they have only faced each other twice since the turn of the millennium.

Once back in 2001, as Colombia won the match in the group stage against Chile 2-0, as they went on to win the trophy that year. Then most recently at the last Copa America in 2016, Chile won 2-0 in the semi-finals, before eventually going on to win the tournament. Will the victors here go on and win the tournament?

Our Predictions and Betting Tips

Colombia are slight favourites to progress here at 11/10, with Chile priced at 13/5. For the sides to draw, that is at 11/5. To qualify, Colombia are at 8/15, with Chile at 11/8. It’s a tough one to call, but I see Colombia extending their stay in Brazil with a victory here.

Penalties are bound to happen at one point in this tournament, so I will anticipate this will go all the way to the end – with Colombia being victorious at 11/1. In the 90 minutes, I will call a 1-1 draw at 5/1, or also be tempted to back a 0-0 draw at 7/1. If you choose the former option, I’d also back both Eduardo Vargas of Chile and Duvan Zapata of Colombia to score at 10/1.

Finally, other special bets include backing the first goal to be scored late between 61 minutes to 70 minutes at 12/1, or back Colombia (12/1) or Chile (18/1) to win from behind.
