A late own goal gives Chelsea third straight win

On Sunday Newcastle gave a tough fight to Chelsea having been resolute in defence for the majority of the game, but in the end failed to make it till the end. An own goal from DeAndre Yedlin proved too vital as it handed Chelsea 3 points.

Overall it was a very tight game with both teams fighting neck to neck but ‘Alas!’ an own goal. Chelsea were playing a high possession game but Newcastle’s tactics worked well as they switched to a defensive approach in frustrating Hazard and company.

Newcastle defence strong in first Half

In the first half there was merely any chance as Newcastle defended everything that Chelsea threw on them. Once Hazard, who was playing his first game this season, came very close in scoring one for Chelsea but could not keep up with the possession near the six-yard box.

Salomon Rondon did not get much chance in the game as Rafa Benitez opted for a defensive strategy. Most of the game was played in Newcastle’s half as they were quite happy to fall back to defense. Chelsea were left frustrated by this tactic as Maurizio Sarri said after the match,

“I have never seen a Rafa Benitez side play with five defenders. It is very difficult to play here for every team – not only us.”

After a very dry first half, as the second half started Cesar Azpilicueta shot from the edge of the area but it was easily saved by Martin Dubravka. In the 72nd minute Antonio Rudiger’s struck a firm shot but was unlucky as the ball came back off the crossbar.

With just about 15 minutes remaining and the game going nowhere, Fabian Schar fouled Marcos Alonso in the box. Newcastle fans would argue this to be a controversial decision but a penalty was awarded.

Eden Hazard showed calmness and finally Chelsea were in front ending a long period of frustration. Hazard’s penalty was his personal and club milestone as he scored the 70th Premier League goal for the club. Now he is only behind Frank Lampard and Didier Drogba in all time scorers.

Well in a spirited Newcastle performance, there came another goal when Yeldin gave a cross to Joselu and he managed to get it past David Luiz to ignite some more frustration in the Blues camp.

Joselu leveler for Newcastle was thought to be enough to end this game as a draw but fortune was not on their side. A drive from Alonso got deflection from Yeldin and the ball found it’s way inside the nets. A wholehearted effort from the Magpies ended in vain as Chelsea clinched 3 points.

Chelsea won the game in the end but they won’t be too happy about it as it was not a complete performance on their part. Though they dominated the game with 81% possession but Alvaro Morata, Pedro and Cesar Azpilicueta missed chances. Their possession was largely due to Newcastle’s tactics of relying back.

With the win Chelsea moved to the top leveling on points with Liverpool and Watford but Newcastle have not tasted a win as yet. With just one draw Rafa Benitez’s team has only one point.
