Roma host Porto in the first leg of their Champions League clash, kicking off in the Stadio Olimpico at 9:00pm local time on Tuesday. The two sides will have been happy to have drawn each other, and both will see this as a great opportunity to reach the quarter finals.

Home Team: Roma

Reaching the semi-finals of the Champions League was a huge achievement last season for Roma, and to salvage their under-performing season, they may have to do the same again. Unlike their opponents, Roma cannot be certain that they will even be in next year’s competition, as they try to replicate last season’s wonders. In the league, Roma are currently in 5th place, and have been inconsistent for large parts of the seasons, and also were eliminated in the Italian Cup recently after being embarrassed by Fiorentina in a 7-1 drubbing.

Roma have produced better results since, drawing at AC Milan, before beating Chievo 3-0 this past weekend. Roma have no real injury concerns, as Edin Dzeko will look to lead the line in a 4-3-3 formation. Steven Nzonzi’s Sevilla knocked out Manchester United at this stage last season, and his impressive performances will be welcomed again as he pulls the strings in the midfield for Roma.

Away Team: Porto

Porto haven’t reached the quarter final stage since the 2014/2015 season where they were beaten by Bayern Munich. Since then, they have been knocked out in the group stage once, and twice at the last 16 stage to Juventus and Liverpool respectively. They’ll feel that they have a great chance in progressing this year though, having won their group convincingly which has given them a favourable tie. With the second leg at home, Porto will hope that avoiding defeat here would set up them to advance.

In their domestic league, Porto are the defending champions and currently top of the league, ahead of the chasing pack including Benfica and Braga. Porto have drawn their last two matches though, and they would have wanted to come into this fixture, their biggest this season, in better form. Strikers Vincent Aboubakar and Moussa Marega are both out injured for Porto, and will be a huge loss for the Portuguese side.

Head to Head

The sides have only played two competitive matches in their history, which occurred at the beginning of the 2016/2017 season. Then, they were facing each other in Champions League play-off to see who would reach the group stages. Porto were held at home to a 1-1 draw, but then won 3-0 at Roma who were reduced to 10 men. The stakes are even higher this time, so who will be making history?

Predictions and Betting Tips

bet now betting on football Roma are favourites to win the first leg at 1/1, with Porto at 13/5. A draw is priced at 5/2. If you want to bet on which team to qualify, you have a 50/50 chance, with both teams at 5/6 to advance. It’s a hard one to call, but considering that Porto’s best strikers are out of action, I would suggest backing Roma to win the first leg, and to advance over two. For the score line, I’d back a home 2-1 win at 8/1.

I’m anticipating a cagey affair, so I don’t think there will be more than 2.5 goals in the match, so backing less is priced at 5/6. Porto scored three goals in their last visit to Stadio Olimpico, so for the tipsters, backing that scenario again is at 8/1. Finally, a halftime/fulltime bet of draw/Roma is priced at 4/1, and that would be how I see the game panning out.
