Ajax welcome Tottenham to the Amsterdam Arena for their hugely significant Champions League semi-final 2nd leg clash, kicking off on Wednesday night at 9:00pm local time in Amsterdam. The hosts take a 1-0 advantage following Donny van de Beek’s winner in the first leg.
Home Team: Ajax
Ajax have been on a journey no one would have anticipated back in August. Last week, they achieved their 3rd successive knockout round victory away from home, adding London to Turin and Madrid. Donny van de Beek scored an early goal as Ajax dominated large parts of the first half against Spurs, and maybe could have capitalised more.
As the 2nd half wore on, Ajax were more content with a 1-0 win, but they came an inch away from scoring a 2nd goal which would have put the tie almost to bed. Ajax have been better on their travels, with them losing at home to Real Madrid, and also drawing with Juventus. Ajax have only beaten Benfica and AEK Athens at home in the Champions League this season.
Ajax secured the Dutch Cup this past weekend, scoring four against Willem II in the final, as their quest to a historic treble continues to live on. The league is still in their hands, and they are clear favourites to progress to the Champions League final.
Away Team: Tottenham Hotspur
Last week I had built up Tottenham’s home leg as arguably their biggest fixture in their history. However, they certainly didn’t rise to the occasion and started the game slowly, and looked disjointed in attack for the majority of the game. To give them the benefit of the doubt, they were missing key players such as Harry Kane, Son Heung-min and, during the match Jan Vertonghen picked up an injury, too.
There was plenty of fight, particularly shown from Moussa Sissoko, in the 2nd half, but no real chances were created so Tottenham had to take the narrow defeat. With Son Heung-min returning, they will hope to cause Ajax more problems, and are certainly not out of this tie just yet. They may have more space to attack, and scoring the first goal would be vital for them. Tottenham have hit a bad run of form since their qualified for the semi-finals of the Champions League, losing four out of five matches, scoring just one goal in that time.
In their most recent outing, they were reduced to 9 men as they lost 1-0 to Bournemouth. Can Tottenham turn their form around, and create history on Wednesday night?
Head to Head
Ajax achieved their first ever win against Tottenham last week, but it will count for nothing if they lose on Wednesday night. This will be their 4th ever meeting, with Tottenham winning their first two matches back in 1981, in the European Cup Winners Cup including a 3-1 win away victory – a repeat of that result will see them progress here.
Predictions and Betting Tips
Ajax are at 11/10 to get a win, with Tottenham at 23/10. For the sides to draw, that is priced at 13/5. Tottenham are underdogs when it comes to qualifying, with them at 5/2, and Ajax are at 2/7. The Ajax crowd will make their stadium a fortress, and even though they didn’t beat Real Madrid or Juventus, I expect them to get a win here to send them to the final. My score line prediction would be a home 2-1 win at 8/1.
For the visitors, smart money would be on Son Heung-min to score at any time at 7/4, and for the hosts, you can get good value for backing both David Neres and Dusan Tadic to score at 9/1. To increase the odds on a Son Heung-min goal, you can back him to score in a defeat at a generous 8/1. Ajax won to nil in the first leg, and you can back on that again at 3/1.
Finally, for the tipsters, Tottenham have got out of jail so many times in the Champions League this season, so if you want to back them to pull the rabbit out of the hat one more time – you back bet on them winning from behind at 14/1.
