Borussia Dortmund welcome Borussia Monchengladbach in the final game of the Bundesliga season, kicking off on Saturday at 3:30pm local time in Germany.

The game could pan out to be more vital for the hosts who have it in their hands to qualify for the Champions League, but the visitors are still in with a glimmer of hope of actually winning the league.

Home Team: Borussia Monchengladbach

Monchengladbach have spent most of their season occupying a top four spot in Bundesliga, so it would be utterly heart-breaking if they were to miss out on the final day. It is technically in their hands, but Frankfurt, and more likely, Bayer Leverkusen can overtake them instead.

Monchengladbach just need to match the result of those two teams in order to clinch it, but if Bayer Leverkusen win their match by a large margin (against Hertha Berlin), then they would overtake Monchengladbach on goal difference. Confidence shouldn’t be too high though, as Monchengladbach haven’t won a home game since the 26th of January. Bayern Munich came and scored 5, Wolfsburg won 3-0, and even sides like Freiburg and Werder Bremen were able to draw.

They did win 4-0 last weekend, but it was against bottom of the league Nurnberg away from home. Can they turn their fortunes around and get an important victory on the final day?

Away Team: Borussia Dortmund

Dortmund will look back at the 2018/2019 season with pride more than anything else, but perhaps a little bit of regret too. From a poor season by their high standards last season, to taking the title race to the final day this year, they have taken huge strides and are competitive once again.

Admittedly, they have a very slim chance of winning the league as they would need to win here, and then hope that Bayern Munich lose to Frankfurt at home which is asking a lot, but crazier things have happened in football.

Regardless, Dortmund will look back at certain games this season, and will think that a few losses could have been converted to wins, particularly their home defeat to Schalke, and they could go into this final game with the destiny in their own hands. It’s not the case though, so they’ll want to finish their season strongly, and just pray for a miracle.

Head to Head

Dortmund have been dominant in this fixture in recent seasons, having won the last seven encounters. Monchengladbach’s last win came in 2015, where they won 3-1 at home, and also won again back in 2013. Despite Dortmund winning on their three most recent visits, they hadn’t won before that since 2009. In the reverse fixture this season, Dortmund won 2-1, with goals coming from Jadon Sancho at Marco Reus, just before the winter break in Germany – when Dortmund were on top of the league.

Predictions and Betting Tips

The hosts are at 15/8 to get the win, with Dortmund priced at 23/20 to keep their slight title chances alive. For the sides to draw, that is backed at 3/1. It’s literally a must-win game for both sides, and their final 90 minutes of the season. A win could bring them so much, so I expect the teams to really go for it…or for it to be incredibly cagey.

German football rarely lets me down though, so I am going to back a 3-2 away win at 12/1. Monchengladbach have been poor of late at home, and with Dortmund perhaps playing with less pressure, it may suit them to play their own game and cause many problems for the hosts. There could be many goals, so you can get kind odds of there being more than 4.5 goals at 13/8. For goal scorers, I’d back the returning Marco Reus and Paco Alcacer to score for the visitors at 4/1.

Finally, if Dortmund can win here, which would end Monchengladbach’s top four bid, coupled with Bayern Munich losing at home to Frankfurt, meaning Dortmund will be champions – you can back that astonishing scenario at 16/1.
