Swiss tactician Lucien Favre returns to Germany as he is set to take over a Borussia Dortmund side that seeks to improve on their last season’s roller coaster ride. Die Schwarzgelben struggled for consistency throughout the season but were lucky enough to finish fourth and claim the last available spot for Champions League qualification.
Having lost the likes of Ousmane Dembele and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang last season, BVB would be knitting their ambitions around captain Marco Reus, who does have some pleasant memories with the club’s new manager.
Reus emerged as one of Germany’s most promising attacking players under Fuvre’s tutelage during his Borussia Monchengladbach days and if he manages to retain his fitness, he might return to his very best this season. Besides a managerial shift, Dortmund has added a fresh batch of names on their roaster including Thomas Belaney, Achraf Hakimi, Marius Wolf and Axel Witsel. After a frustrating 2017/18 campaign, it’s only normal that Borussia Dortmund is seen as more of an underdog this season but that could be a blessing in disguise for the Black and Yellow.
As history suggests, Borussia Dortmund usually play their best when the limelight is focused elsewhere and if that’s the case again, the Yellow Wall should be looking forward to an exciting season.
PREDICTED XI (4-3-3): Burki (gk), Piszczek, Akanji, Diallo, Schmelzer, Delaney, Witsel, Pulisic, Reus, Sancho, Philipp
Alike their Sunday hosts, RB Leipzig will also see a new manager standing in their technical area. The club’s sporting director Ralph Rangnick will serve as an interim manager before handing over charge to Julian Nagelsmann next season. Leipzig had a fairy tale campaign the season before last, when they finished runner-ups to Bayern Munich. However, their follow-up endeavor failed to match the standards they had set the previous term, leading Die Roten Bullen to a Champions League exodus.
The biggest challenge during Rangnick’s transitional reign at Leipzig would be dealing with the midfield void left by Naby Keita in the summer and he will be hoping Sebastian Rudy would be a worthy successor to the Guinean midfield maestro. Timo Werner had a disappointing World Cup for Germany but he will be out to silence his critics with his distinguishing goal scoring abilities. Emil Forsberg and Timo Werner have linked up on numerous occasions over the past two seasons much to the misery of opposition defenders.
Should they manage to rekindle their partnership, Leipzig could get off to a flying start by registering an away day victory at Dortmund’s fortress.
PREDICTED LINEUP (4-4-2): Gulacsi (gk), Klostermann, Orban, Upamecano, Saracchi, Bruma, Demme, Ilsanker, Forsberg , Werner, Poulsen.
RB Leipzig’s last visit to the Signal Iduna Park earned them an incredible 3-2 victory, marking the end of BVB’s 41 match unbeaten streak at home. But playing away to Borussia Dortmund is always a daunting task for any team as visitors are often fazed by the vocal and lively BVB crowd. Dormund comes off a fantastic pre-season which saw them besting the likes of Liverpool and Manchester City. Pair their recent form up with Borussia Dortmund’s phenomenal home record-a BVB win is the likeliest outcome of this match.
