It was Tallinn’s A. Le Coq Arena, Estonia where Real Madrid took on their local rivals Atletico Madrid in the UEFA Super Cup final. Atletico Madrid completed a comprehensive demolition as three times Champions League winners Real Madrid were left wondering after the departure of a big name from the club. The match was not at all one-sided, as it went to the extra time to decide the winners. In the extra-time Koke and Saul Niguez scored a goal each to turn the game in the favor of Atletico Madrid and the final score sheet read 4-2.

Such a fierce and deep history is involved between the two teams that whenever they take the field against each other, the games have always been thrillers. And the Wednesday’s match was no less, as the fortunes of both the teams shifted back and forth before finally settling in the favor of Europa League holders Atletico Madrid in the extra time.

Diego Costa with the rampage

The Spain International was at his best as he scored twice in a match that produced high quality action. He started the proceedings with a perfect hit over the keeper, Keylor Navas, to get a lead for Atletico Madrid in the early stages of the game. He rushed past the Real Madrid defense in no time before netting the ball from a very difficult angle.

Benzema’s equalizer

There was no Cristiano Ronaldo in the team, but still Real Madrid had such a quality that getting an equalizer was just a matter of time. Karim Benzema finally headed the ball in the goal with ease after Gareth Bale perfectly delivered a cross to find the French-man in the best position to score.

Cool captain, cool finish

Then there was a handball which followed a penalty and Sergio Ramos struck the ball in the nets to get his team surge into the lead. There was a corner which found the hand of Atletico Madrid’s Juanfran and the foul lead to a penalty. The skipper, Sergio Ramos calmly deposited the ball in the nets. Real Madrid were ahead and it was 2-1.

The star-performer Costa again

Just about ten minutes to go and Real Madrid leading 2-1, most of the Real’s fans were sniffing the victory. But it wasn’t over yet and Diego Costa reminded this to all the Real supporters. With an excellent support from Juanfran, Costa finished superbly and it was 2-2 with the game back on.

Extra time

Sergio Ramos fouled near the edge of the Madrid box and Saul Niguez scored a goal with a perfect volley. Thomas Partey came as a substitute and it was due to his cross that Saul Niquez got the ball. Extra time was a time for the substitutes to get in the show as Vitolo passed superbly to Koke who fired the ball home to make it 4-2 for Atletico.

It was just the Super Cup but it highlighted the fact that post Cristiano Ronaldo era won’t be quite smooth for the Champion’s League holders. There are quite a few questions to be answered now. Bale and Benzema will be the key for Real Madrid ahead but from whom they will be getting the required support needs to be seen. Anyhow Atletico and Costa cannot be happier than that after they got one of the sweetest victories against their arch-rivals.
